Alzheimer’s Disease Diagnosis

In the United States alone, over 5 million people have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. This figure includes those over 65, and those with early-onset. More cases are being diagnosed each year due to early detection, and continues to change countless lives of all ages.

Being fully diagnosed with Alzheimer’s indicates the inability to work due to severe cognitive impairment. This also points to dependence on others for daily tasks, like taking medications, shopping, and choosing weather appropriate clothing.

Researchers continue to study the genetic component to Alzheimer’s. Right now they do know if both parents have the condition, roughly 40% of those offspring will develop the same issues by age 65.

Compassionate Allowances Initiative

The Social Security Administration has a program called Compassionate Allowances Initiative, which allows for the faster processing of benefits for certain conditions. Early-Onset Alzheimer’s disease has been added to this list along with Primary Progressive Aphasia and “mixed-dementia.”

If you have received a medically documented diagnosis of one of these conditions, you are likely eligible for the initiative. This benefit can allow for respite care, and enable patients to age in place at home.
